Again this year, we organised a big solar panel lottery with the chance to win a 12-panel solar power system. The winners this time were Janne and Mari-Anne Honkaselle, who live in a detached house in Vantaa. The Honkas already had reason to be very happy, as their daughter’s wedding was coming up this weekend. Preparations for the wedding were underway and the announcement of the title came at a hectic time.
“I was making wedding decorations in the garage. I was sawing something heart-shaped into the signpost when I got a call from a representative of Hausoturva”, Janne Honkanen says. When the victory was announced, Honkanen was speechless for a moment. “It came completely out of the woodwork.”
“We might have panels”
After the phone call, Janne Honkanen maintained a healthy scepticism and was sceptical about the news. “I don’t think anyone else believed me when I went upstairs to tell them we’d won the panels”. Janne Honkanen next went online to find out more about the draw. When pictures of the previous winners were found on the Taloturva website, Honkanen began to have some doubts that the prize was real. “I told the neighbour that we might have panels”.
Janne Honkanen says that he doesn’t even usually participate in lotteries. He made an exception when the Honkases were considering solar panels and looked for information on the internet. “I hadn’t even remembered participating in any lottery,” Honkanen reveals. “It’s quite a threshold to participate, as nowadays social media is full of sweepstakes, and there is no certainty about their authenticity,” Mari-Anne Honkanen comments.
Green values and the price of electricity made me think about solar panels
The Honkas had been thinking about the panels for some time. “Before we moved here, we talked quite a lot about panels,” Mari-Anne Honkanen recalls. “Green values made me think.”
In addition to green values, the behaviour of electricity prices also weighed in the balance. Janne Honkanen says he likes Excel and keeps a close eye on electricity consumption and prices from his spreadsheets. In Honkasten, the electricity transmission price for a detached house is significant, but the electricity transmission charges for a cottage in particular have caused some grey hairs. “The electricity bills at the cottage are such that when you get them, you feel like disconnecting the electricity completely,” says Janne Honkanen. “Yes, the transfer fees and taxes are an interesting part,” sighs Mari-Anne Honkanen. “Notice how the muscles tense up when you read the bill”.
“Now I can make new boards related to solar panels,” says Janne Honkanen.
