Replacement of sewer pipes in a detached house by socketing!
Ten years ago, sewers were replaced by opening up the structures. At that time, the injection in the plumbing of a detached house was still an unknown and expensive project. With the growth of camera technology and the industry, diving is usually the only sensible way to replace sewer pipes from a cost and practical point of view.
Injection means installing a felt sock made of a plastic mix inside an old sewer pipe, which is then cured to form a strong and durable plastic pipe. The old pipe is left in place and acts as a mould for the new self-supporting pipe.
Insurance companies tend to treat plunging as if the pipes had been replaced by hand.

What is the right time to do a sewer renovation?
The drains are there to collect and transport water from the house. This was the so-called “better-off” housing in the 1950s. When the drains in the house are blocked, so the meaning of these is better understood, so let’s talk about basic comfort. Sewer pipes are less frequently inspected and only in recent years has sewer imaging made it possible to check their condition. The first step is to take a picture of the sewer pipes and then assess the possibility of diving or sewage disposal.
The old sewer pipes in a detached house come to the end of their useful life at 30-40 years old. Sure, pipes can last longer, but the risk of water damage increases significantly the older the drain gets.
The first plastic pipes came on the market in the early 70s and these were not able to withstand the temperature fluctuations of hot water. The problems with plastic pipes are joint and material problems are visible up to -85.
It is difficult to assess the condition of the drainage system with your own eyes, as the pipes are mostly hidden inside the structures. The most reliable and easiest way to find out the condition of your drains is to order a free drain survey from us.

Frequently asked questions about our sewer renovations
Prices for sewerage installation in a detached house range from €5000 to €25 000
The first quality criterion for sewer sealing is that the work is done properly, one time, in accordance with the certificates.
The work is underground and can only be done once.
If the work is done badly, it cannot be repaired and the old sewers might have worked better.
Taloturva was the first diving company in the industry to do drains in single family homes.
We if anyone knows what sewer repairs cost.
Sewer blockage price affected
- Drainage points (toilet seat, sinks and floor drains).
- Metreage for diving
- Type of outdoor well, Concrete well (large), inspection well or self-contained well system
- Ventilation duct type and volume
- Is there an inspection hatch in the house
- House m2 and number of storeys
- Pipe material, Cast iron, concrete, plastic. The house may also contain more than one material.
Comments:
-Drainage wells will not be renovated
-Good to soak the garage floor drains
-Some may suggest leaving part of it unplugged. You should not get involved in this without a reason!
-The number of ventilation ducts is indicated by the roof penetrations, these can also be in the upper floor.
-Ventilation ducts should always be plugged! The manufacturer’s warranty may otherwise be invalidated. Water enters the ventilation drain and this run-off water can get between the drainage socket and the old pipe. This means that there is a risk that an otherwise well-done soaking will be ruined by not soaking the ventilation drain.
-Whether the sewer should be connected to the well or to the boundary of the property. This is worth checking with an expert.
-Ventilation duct may also be treated as a suction valve inside, so no pipe goes to the roof
We calculate an offer for each property according to your needs and often properties that look the same from the outside can have different prices.
Plastic sewers should first be described and, on this basis, the sewer sealing should be assessed,
How do I know if it makes sense to soak the plastic drains in our home?
- In 1970s-1980s private houses, plastic drainage pipes are often located in the insulation between the pipes, rather than in the sand. When the pipe leaks, this seeps into the structure.
Moisture can accumulate in the intermediate insulation, causing odours in the apartment - The lifespan of plastic sewer pipes depends on installation, use and conditions, but is generally around 35 years.Insurance companies often do not provide cover for sewer pipes over 40 years old.
- The 130 m2 house has about 50 sewer connections and 100 seals, which multiplies the potential problems.
- History of manufacturing:
- The manufacture of PVC plastic sewer pipes began in 1965 and the first problems quickly became apparent with the advent of hot water, led by the increasing use of dishwashers.
PVC plastic cannot withstand the temperature differences between cold sewer gases and the water being discharged. - HT (High Temperature) pipes were introduced in 1976 in response to the challenges of heat resistance.
- Old stocks were sold for years afterwards.
Old and new plastic pipes could be mixed up in installations until the 1980s. - Plastic sewers become vitrified and brittle as the plasticizers used in the sewers evaporate from the pipe.
The pipe can be easily broken by mechanical shock or vibration.
- Installation errors
- In the early 1970s, the installation of plastic sewer pipes became easy and was mainly done by carpenters.
This meant that there was no training to install the pipes.
Problems detected:
- The sealing ring was attached to the sleeve, so that the seal came off.
The most common reason was that the lubricant was not always used. - The joints were not installed at the bottom.
Temperature fluctuations or inadequate mooring increase the risk - The pipe supports and pouring are out of order due to poor foundation work.
This can cause deformation of the pipe or water to accumulate on the bottom. - Pipes outside the house were at risk from soil changes or ground pressure.
- Mineral oil used as a solvent weakens seals so that there may be nothing left of the seal
- The sealant was left out and replaced with glue.
The glue is no longer a good sealant
- Floor drains:
- In the early 1970s, plastic floor drains started to become more common, using mainly PVC until the 1980s.
Someone asked this and commented “there are no free lunches”.
Well the situation is that we specialise in sewer socketing for detached houses and few people renew sewers by first checking their condition.
We’ve been in the business for 10 years and we take a long-term view.
Even if the home owner is not doing any diving at this stage, it is likely that in the next 5 years it will become an issue.
A drain survey is a calling card for our company.
We schedule the shootings efficiently in our calendars. The description always provides added value for our customer, as it gives the customer, together with a professional, an idea of the condition of the plumbing.
Why film a sewer?
Describe the drains before the problems as after.
Traditionally, you are asked to be on the scene when problems are already at hand.
Sometimes you’re in a situation where the sewer backfilling can no longer be done or there’s been water damage to the home.
You don’t have to look at the drain every week when you clean it, but if it’s coming to the end of its life, it’s worth checking every few years. The sewer in your home is exposed to a wide range of corrosive substances every day. Over the years, depending on the material, sewer pipes start to deteriorate, crack, craze and glaze. This is how old sewer pipes can pose a serious risk of water damage. In addition, the gases in the pipeline can create holes in the top of the pipe, allowing gases to escape from the pipe into the breathing air, posing a health risk. Drains are an important part of everyday life in the home and even if they are hidden away
The sewer survey includes
- Sewer imaging with a special camera
- Expert assessment of the need for plumbing repairs and maintenance
- Review of results with an expert
- If necessary, a quote for sewer repair or maintenance
Sewer plugging may seem like a complicated process at first glance, but in principle, plugging installation is straightforward.
However, it is important that the drain blocking is carried out by a skilled person with specialist knowledge to ensure that the job is done to a high standard.
Materials used in sewer sealing:
Felt sock with pressure membrane: the core material of the graft is a felt sock with a pressure membrane on the inside.
This felt is impregnated with plastic, which remains on top of the old pipe.
When the felt sock hardens, it forms a new plastic pipe.
The pressure membrane side remains as the inner surface of the pipe, along which the substances move in the sewer.
Hard:
The hardener is the substance that hardens the plastic epoxy to the felt sock.
It ensures these together form a strong and durable coating.
Epoxy:
Epoxy is a plastic material impregnated with a plank into a felt sock.
The socketing materials used are designed to achieve a service life of 30-50 years.
These materials are EuroFins approved, and installation is carried out in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
Regular spot checks are carried out on both materials and installation methods to ensure their quality.
Responsible installation:
House security always insists on responsible installation of socketing.
Although the diving industry may sometimes mix up materials on a whim for price reasons, Taloturva always adheres to tested and safe chemical mixtures.
We do not compromise on quality, and we carry out regular inspections to ensure that all diving is carried out responsibly and safely.
Sewer socketing offers a durable solution, and the materials and installation methods used are key to ensuring that the socketing lasts for decades.
In 2012, we started doing plumbing renovations in a detached house and at that time, renovations were done in many ways.
They wanted to make a change and put together a team of professionals to develop a single-family home plumbing renovation. A way was born to do the job “in 3 days” – without evacuation and without damaging structures. We are still on this path and every day we are working to make our approach more efficient and better.
So, no successful drain blockage is based not on the virtuosity or luck of the installer, but on a sophisticated installation method and testing.
House security is still only focused on plumbing repairs in detached houses.
Why can you get a sewer lock from the building security system?
An entrepreneurial company
We have wanted to maintain a good working community and pay our plumbers a decent wage.
Sewer fitters work with an entrepreneurial spirit and everyone works as if for themselves.
When a sewer fitter wants to continue working for the company, this is reflected in their responsibility and professional ethics.
An entrepreneurial mental plumbing work community develops a fitter’s attitude and is also able to be critical of their own work and deal with any plumbing complaints that arise.
The best part of it all, however, is that the Sewer Fitter serves each customer from start to finish, as well as taking responsibility for providing a sewer fitting experience better than the expectations were at the origin.
The professionalism of a sewerage installer
We’ve been lucky, we used to get the best sewer fitters in the business to work for Taloturva, and they’ve stayed with us.
Together, we have been able to focus on developing the soaking process over the long term.
The installers at Taloturva have attended training courses organised by the company and the supplier, and have been properly trained for the job.
The plumber does the same repetition every week, so every little detail is polished.
Most of the sewer fitters have their first training course organised by an external school, “basic training for a sewer fitter”.
A trained plumber is professional and cares about the environment.
Building security practices in sewerage support
The company has an active diving field management team, which participates in the installations and monitors the quality of the work.
The submergence field management visits the completed sites and evaluates possible improvements that can be given to the sewerage contractor.
Customers praise the sewer installer to the foreman, but it is the foreman’s job to evaluate the installation from the point of view of his own professionalism.
House Security regularly organises Sewer Fitting installation training courses, with an emphasis on the written installation method.
Our internalised installation approach is reflected in the fact that quality is consistent in every completed project.
Guarantees and certificates for sewerage piping
Let’s just say that the best guarantee is to get the job done right the first time, especially when the work to be done is underground work that needs to be put in place all at once.
Warranties and certificates are an added bonus to renovation.
Building security gives a 10-year installation guarantee for sewer locks.
This means that we believe in our own work, that for 10 years there will be no need to complain about a faulty installation.
We use the guidelines for drain sealing materials provided by the pipe manufacturer.
The industry may mix raw materials on a whim and the chemical behaviour of these has not been studied in detail by anyone.
When properly used, the pipe manufacturer’s materials give a minimum of 35 years of service life.
We also follow the general installation guidelines, which aim for a 50-year service life.
Free sewer mapping
We always survey each sewer in advance, free of charge.
This means that we come to your home and take a picture of the drains and make a condition assessment.
This always allows us to size the item more accurately and get the right price for the sewer installation.
This requires the right customer service attitude from the company, as the easiest way would be to send a quote by email.
This is reflected in the fact that reality and price get mixed up at the installation stage.
At Taloturva, we always handle the job in such a way that there are no afterthoughts.
Sewer renovation in a detached house is over in 3-5 days
Work phases of sewer renovation
