Me, the plumber and a lucky plumbing renovation
“In 1999 I bought a big detached house, 30 years old at the time. I remember a delightful old couple selling the house saying: ‘if there’s a water damage, run out to the bike shed on the street and turn off the water from here’. Ever since then I had been wondering when and what to do about the plumbing. I wanted to free my brain for other pleasant things and to take my worries about the house away. I had already had a new roof put on the house, so there weren’t many things left to fix in my home other than the pipes. I had neighbours, acquaintances and consultants visiting my house to give their advice. At the suggestion of one consultant, I had the drawings for the pipe modifications stamped by the Building Control Agency in the summer of 2013.”

“After that, the strangest phase of the case began. When I sent out requests for quotations to pipe companies in the metropolitan area, no one responded. The requests for quotations were accompanied by drawings and the hope that the work could be done at any time. I had obtained the names of plumbing companies that do work on small houses from these same consultants, and some of them I looked up myself. As I had not heard back from anyone for two months, I decided to do nothing and let any water drain into the structure and then let the insurance companies pay the costs; I had done my best. I had a kind of fingerprint on the prices.”

“In early December, I received a call from a company in Vaajakoski, whose representative was in Helsinki, offering to renovate the pipes in old houses in our area. I told them that they could replace the hot and cold water pipes in my house, as long as I knew the price. A few days later, a young punctual man from the same company arrived with his laptop. The man wrote down on his laptop how many taps, toilets and toilets were to be replaced, immediately we went through all the drilling points for the floors and walls and the man called the “excavator-drill company” for the cost of opening up the yard for a quote. We also replaced the main water pipe from the outside water meter at the same time. Our yard is not the easiest to get to and we needed not only a Bobcat on site but also a crane to lift the Bobcat to the excavation site.”
“It took less than 2 hours to make the offer and this plan, and because the representative had a printer with him, I was able to sign the contract right away. And then to the repair itself. The work started on Monday morning, the yard was open in an hour and the next day we were well into the next day and the yard was sealed. I was in the bath 2 days later on Wednesday and on Thursday the guys were vacuuming up and taking their machines away. The garbage they took away every day as it accumulated. I understood that this took a little longer because my house is a big 280 m2 and there are 4 toilets, 3 bathrooms, 2 kitchens, 13 taps. There are 2 floors. This job was a full 10 and falls under the household deduction.”
