In this article, we will tell you what it means to dive a sewer in a private house, how diving differs from coating and how much it usually costs to dive a sewer. We also provide tips to help you get your private house drainage survey done, even free of charge. Nowadays, a survey of the sewer situation in a private house and sewer renovation almost always starts with a sewer survey. A sewer survey will help you to assess when a sewer repair is absolutely necessary and when you can wait a little longer. Drainage mapping is therefore an important part of the sewer inspection of a private house.

What is sewer diversion?

In short, socketing is a renovation method in which sewer pipes are renewed by inserting an epoxy-plastic sock into the old pipe. As the epoxy dries, the sock hardens and becomes a durable, seamless drainage pipe. The branches of the piping system are made by branch connections using branch forks. Sewer socketing is usually done on cast iron pipes that are more than 30 years old.

The benefits of sewer diving

The main benefit of grafting is a lower cost than traditional pipe repair. There is no need to dismantle the building’s structures or dig up pipes from underground, saving labour costs, materials, clean-up costs and the environment.

Traditional pipe renovation means replacing old pipes with new ones. The end result is a house with shiny new plumbing, but it’s a big job and the cost of the work is high. But it takes less than a week to plug a drain and you don’t have to move out of your home. This reduces the stress of sewer renovation and makes it a particularly easy option for building occupants.

The poor condition of old pipes is not an obstacle to sewer submergence. Even holes in the old pipe are not a problem, because the new pipe will carry itself. The submerged pipes will last for the next 50 years, which is equivalent to the life of conventionally replaced pipes.

Grafting is different from coating

Sometimes people confuse dipping and coating. But they are two different things. The coating involves injecting a coating into the pipe to protect it from wear and tear and to repair small hairline cracks. If the pipework is in poor condition or has holes, coating is a risky option or cannot be done at all. The lifetime of the coating is about 10-20 years, after which the piping must be replaced. Like coating, grouting is easy to do, but offers a much more durable result because a new pipe is made inside the old one. As mentioned above, the lifetime of a socketed pipe is about 50 years.

Price of sewer blockage

The price of sewer dipping will certainly be of interest to the renovator who starts a sewer dipping project in a private house. Generally speaking, the cost of a sewerage installation is influenced by the size of the pipework, the number of branches, the condition of the pipes and the number of pieces of equipment and fittings to be replaced.

The cost of a sewer replacement in a detached house is usually around €15 000 – €30 000.

A sewer survey gives added value to the homeowner, as it provides real-time information on the condition of the plumbing system.
