Odour smell revealed sewage problems

Ilkka Haukka from Huittinen started to smell sewage in his house. Initially, the problems were thought to be related to the air conditioning, but Ilkka decided to have the sewerage system in his house, which was partly in original condition, checked. A hole was discovered in the drain, through which the smell entered the house. Sewer blocking by the building security company the smell disappeared immediately.

The sewerage system of the private house built in 1957 in Hauka is quite large, as there are showers and toilets on each floor. The house had already undergone minor sewer renovations in the past, but the main sewer was in perfect original condition.

– In 1990, the sewerage system was renovated in those parts of the house where the pipes under the floor were easily accessible. However, some of the pipes remained cast iron, and the main sewer here is concrete,” says Ilkka Falukka.

– The diving renovation started when the sewer started to smell. Initially, it was suspected that the problem was related to the air conditioning, but this was not the case. After that I started calling around to companies that do soaking. I realised that the pipes are at the end of their rope – something has to be done.

“House security came to visit and check it out right away!”

Several apartment buildings in Huittinen have undergone renovations. Ilkka got a list of companies that do similar renovations also for private houses from a property manager he knows. Among the list was Hausoturva.

– I called a few companies, but they all asked for pictures of the house. I knew they were useless, because there are no good sewage photos of houses this old,” Ilkka recalls.

– The building security company immediately said that they would come and check the situation. They took it all in hand – they did an endoscopy on the drain and got to work. I like this kind of direct action,” says Ilkka.

The cause of the smell was discovered – a hole was found in the pipe

The renovation started with a sewer survey by Taloturva to find out the current condition of the sewer before it is soaked. This also allowed Ilkka to see the condition of the sewer.

– In particular, the old concrete drain had collapsed, and the water was lying still. However, the hole was not yet noticed at this point.

– When the installers came, they found the hole. Fortunately, it was in the roof of the pipe, so no leakage had occurred, but this was the source of the smell,” Ilkka says.

“I give it an “A” grade”

According to Ilka, the actual renovation took about six days. For the family, the renovation was very easy compared to, for example, opening up the concrete floor of the basement. The smell also disappeared immediately after the renovation.

– I give it an “A” grade. The guys were professional and did the job neatly. The renovation was really hassle-free for us, compared to having to go out and tear things apart – which would be expensive.

– The most concrete benefit for us is that the smell disappeared immediately. With grafting comes both certainty and good guarantees. The material is guaranteed for 50 years and the workmanship for 10 years,” Ilkka concludes.
