The sewer in the 1960s house of Liisa and Jouko Rautomäki with its cast iron pipes was in original condition. Sewer renovation The Rautomäe had set 2018 as the deadline for their house to be connected to the water cooperative’s sewerage system. According to the team, diving was the only viable option for rehabilitating the sewer.
When the Rautomäe family built their house in the 1960s, the sewers were made of cast iron pipes instead of plastic ones. The basic problem with old cast iron pipes is oxidation, which can cause hidden leaks as sewers age. The drains also become greasy and accumulate dirt, which is best seen when the sink no longer flushes properly.
– We didn’t have any pressing need to renovate, but we knew that these cast iron pipes wouldn’t last forever. Here are the water cooperative’s sewers and pump wells, which are close to completion and should be connected in 2018. I thought that by then the pipes should be in place,” Jouko Rautomäki says.
– Everything else was fine, but the kitchen sink was no longer working properly. That was the best way to see that there was stuff in the pipes.
“Grafting was the only option”
The Rautomäe family first became acquainted with Taloturva in 2014, when the company renovated the couple’s domestic hot water and heating network. After a successful renovation, the company was also on their minds for the sewer renovation.
– I saw a demonstration of the installation in Kouvola and came to the conclusion that this is the only option for us too. Let’s not start digging new pipes, Jouko says.
“The renovation was easy for us”
For the residents, the four-day renovation of the Iron Hills was very easy. The couple went to the cottage when the renovation started and returned when everything was ready. The job was completed on time and did not interfere with normal life.
– Two guys came on Monday morning. They started to cover the floor and removed the toilet seat and the odour traps. “On Thursday they called us and said ‘come on home, it’s ready here’,” Jouko laughs.
– I did go to see it here sometime in the evening. Back then, there was sock in the tube and compressed air on overnight to expand the sock.
“There’s a big difference!”
With the renovation of the sewerage system in the Iron Hills, there is no need to worry about the functioning of old pipes or problem areas, and you can safely connect your house to the sewerage system of the water cooperative. In addition to these factors, Jouko says that a visible benefit is that the drains are draining better.
– There is a big difference! The water goes down every sink without you noticing. In the old days, water would go from the sinks and slowly trickle down the drain. It’s obvious that if the pipes are blocked, the water won’t get through.
– I would say that the work we have done now with the building security company has gone smoothly and I have been satisfied. I can recommend the company, Jouko concludes.
